Unlacquered brass is simply brass with no protective coating, also known as lacquer. It is polished or brushed to refine the finish. Unlacquered brass is designed to tarnish and darken as it oxidizes, which gives it a lovely, antiqued, duller color. This is the tarnish people speak of, and the aged look is referred to as patina.
